Osseointegration of Biomaterials for Spinal Implants

In this project, we aim to study the mechanical and biological response of silicon nitride, in comparison to reference control materials commonly used in orthopaedic implants, and to develop a 3D-designed macroporous scaffold with improved osseointegration for spinal fusion application. Specifically, we aim to investigate the pre-osteoblast response to surface functionalized biomaterials, cell ingrowth and osteogenic differentiation in the scaffold and osseointegration of a representative spinal implant in a murine spinal fusion model.
