Combinatorial coating development for spinal applications
My research focus is on development a surface coating for a spinal implant - total disc replacement (TDR). The coating will be designed to increase the service life of the spinal implant by reducing wear and ion release, a prominent cause of implant failure. Silicon nitride and diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings will form the basis, and the new materials will be evaluated in terms of properties of high relevance to the future application, i.e. dissolution behaviour, mechanical properties and biocompatibility, as a function of chemical composition and coating morphology.
