Mechanical behavior of bone/implants
A better understanding of the mechanical behavior of trabecular bone itself or bone with augmentation/implant contributes to a better treatment of bone fractures. In this project, we aim to estimate trabecular elastic properties; compare the different failure behaviors of bone around the implant with/without augmentation. All these will finally contribute to a validated finite element model of bone-implant simulation which could be used for implant design or other related treatments.
Elastic modulus of trabecular bone
In-situ single trabecular compression testing inside a synchrotron radiation µCT enables the 3D visualization and quantification of the trabecular deformation during compression testing. By comparing the experimental results with the finite element model, elastic modulus of the single trabeculae could be estimated.

Trabecular bone failure around the implant
In-situ pullout testing of trabecular bone with screw implant inside a synchrotron radiation µCT captured the crack growth around the screw. Different failure pattern might reflect the effect of parameters in screw design or augmentation materials.
