Ammonia electrolysis
Ammonia is one of the most important industrial chemical feedstocks in today’s society, and also one of the major alternative, carbon-free energy carriers of tomorrow’s energy system. It can be easily condensed into a liquid for transportation, and in contrast to hydrogen, ammonia can be more easily stored. In this project, we aim to demonstrate a complete, green ammonia carbon-neutral cycle at the laboratory scale. Specifically, at Uppsala University, we will develop novel catalysts, such as high-entropy alloys, oxides, and nitrides, and we will use nitrogen reduction to ammonia and direct ammonia fuel cell as the main example and discuss the possibility to find sustainable alternatives to the well-known Haber-Bosch process.
